About Us

PromiseTracker, is a tool to help journalists and civil society watchdogs more easily track campaign promises and other political / government pledges, using official evidence / data, as well as crowdsourced information, with a transparent and defensible methodology, to help inject accountability and honesty into the often cavalier way that promises are made to citizens to win their support for elections, policies and contracts but are seldom honoured.

About Promise Tracker

Holding Power Accountable to Every Promise

Promise Tracker is a civic tech initiative dedicated to injecting honesty, transparency, and data-driven accountability into public leadership. Developed by PesaCheck under the umbrella of Code for Africa (CfA), our platform bridges the gap between political rhetoric and real-world results by systematically tracking campaign pledges, policy commitments, and government promises across the continent.

Why We Built This

Political candidate and government officials often make sweeping commitments to win elections, secure contracts, or pass policies—only for those promises to fade from public memory once in office. We launched Promise Tracker to break this cycle.

Citizens, journalists, and civil society watchdogs deserve more than political rhetoric; they deserve clear proof, visible progress updates, and verifiable facts. Our team of civic technologists, researchers, and fact-checkers works to ensure that public pledges remain transparent, measurable, and unalterable over time.

How It Works: Our Methodology

To keep our monitoring transparent and defensible, we combine modern technology with expert human verification:

  • AI-Assisted Extraction: We ingest official manifestos, speeches, and public records, using structured extraction tools to isolate individual, actionable commitments.
  • Evidence-Based Tracking: Every promise on our platform is linked directly to primary sources, government budgets, and verified public documents.
  • Community Input: We leverage crowdsourced data and local reporting to gather ground-level evidence on project developments.

Every status, whether a promise is Kept, In Progress, or Broken, is backed by an undeniable paper trail.

Open Source & Open Data

As an openAFRICA project, we believe that digital public infrastructure belongs to the public. Transparency isn't just our mission—it is how we build our software.

  • Open Code: Our platform codebase is publicly accessible on GitHub, allowing developers and newsrooms to deploy their own promise trackers.
  • Open Data: All collected datasets are available on openAFRICA for independent research and reporting.
  • Creative Commons: Our content is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. You are free to reuse, adapt, and share our work to empower your local community.
